چکیده

It is known that the toughness of brittle ceramics can be improved significantly with the addition of hard platelets. In the present study, platelet-shape multilayer ceramic laminates are utilized as a toughening agent for alumina ceramics. They are prepared by laminating the BaTiO3-based ceramic tapes. Although the elastic modulus of the BaTiO3based platelets is lower than that of the alumina matrix, and the platelets are also reactive to alumina at elevated temperatures, the weak platelets are found to exhibit the ability to deflect major matrix cracks by forming a large number of microcrack branches within the platelets, thus achieving the desired toughening effect.

Micromechanics of fracturing in nanoceramics.

An overview of key experimental data and theoretical representations on fracture processes in nanoceramics is presented. The focuses are placed on crack growth in nanoceramics and their toughening micromechanics. Conventional toughening micromechanisms are discussed which effectively operate in both microcrystalline-matrix ceramics containing nanoinclusions and nanocrystalline-matrix ceramics. ...

The toughening mechanism of nacre and structural materials inspired by nacre.

The structure and the toughening mechanism of nacre have been the subject of intensive research over the last 30 years. This interest originates from nacre's excellent combination of strength, stiffness and toughness, despite its high, for a biological material, volume fraction of inorganic phase, typically 95%. Owing to the improvement of nanoscale measurement and observation techniques, signi...

Origin of flaw-tolerance in nacre

Over the past decades, our understanding of nacre's toughening origin has long stayed at the level of crack deflection along the biopolymer interface between aragonite platelets. It has been widely thought that the ceramic aragonite platelets in nacre invariably remain shielded from the propagating crack. Here we report an unexpected experimental observation that the propagating crack, surprisi...

Toughening mechanisms in bioinspired multilayered materials.

Outstanding mechanical properties of biological multilayered materials are strongly influenced by nanoscale features in their structure. In this study, mechanical behaviour and toughening mechanisms of abalone nacre-inspired multilayered materials are explored. In nacre's structure, the organic matrix, pillars and the roughness of the aragonite platelets play important roles in its overall mech...
